2018 Imprint Competition
The Museum continues Wharton Esherick’s artistic vision he expressed through woodblock prints by hosting an annual high school competition titled Imprint. We currently invite art classes from the Chester, Bucks, Delaware, Montgomery & Philadelphia Counties to enter each year and hope to continue to expand our range in the future. Our aim for this program, is to inspire new generations of young artists through Esherick’s prints and legacy.
The jury will select pieces to be exhibited at the Wharton Esherick Museum, from March 3 – May 13, 2018, with the opening reception on March 11 from 1 -4 pm. We’re excited to announce our partnership with the Philadelphia International Airport and their Art at the Airport program for 2019! Prints from the 2018 Competition will travel to the Philadelphia Airport to be on display in 2019.
The competition is open high schools in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia Counties. Public, private, charter, and home schools may enter. The works must follow this year’s theme: The Life & Work of Wharton Esherick. Prints accepted are made by woodcut, linoleum, ez or soft cut. For the 2018 competition only, we will accept etchings. The print(s) must be available for the duration of the exhibition. Please check your entry form for accuracy and legibility, as this information may be used for signage and publication.
The works will be judged, without revealing the artist’s name or school, by a jury composed of museum staff and professional artists and/or art teachers will select twelve to fifteen entries for a spring 2018 exhibit at the Wharton Esherick Museum. The Best of Show, second and third place winners will receive a cash prize as will their art departments. Due to this year’s parternship with the Philadelphia Airport, a second round of additional finalists will be selected for exhibition at the airport.
A Viewer’s Choice Award will be voted on through our Facebook page. While there is no cash prize for Viewer’s Choice, the print may already be one chosen by the judges or be voted into the show through the public’s participation. Criteria for selection are creativity and craftsmanship. Entrants will be notified by February 16, 2018 of the jury’s decisions.
